New York Giants unveil throwback uniforms, commemorate 100th season
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a big news week for the New York Giants, who like the other 31 NFL teams, had their full 2024 schedule released on Wednesday amongst other exciting announcements.

On Wednesday it was also announced that New York will be the team featured on HBO’s popular documentary series Hard Knocks during training camp, and on Thursday the Giants also revealed a throwback uniform that they will be sporting twice during the upcoming season.

2024 marks the 100th season for the storied franchise, and to celebrate a century, the Giants will be wearing a modernized uniform that will feature a version of the team’s 1933 jersey, 1925 pants and socks, and a helmet from the 1938 season. A uniform that they will wear two times during the year to pay homage to the history of the organization.

The tan pants and striped socks were featured in New York’s first inaugural season in 1925. With a red jersey with blue and white accents reminiscent of what the Giants sported when they played in their first NFL Championship Game in 1933. Each jersey will also feature the team’s official “100 Seasons” logo as a patch.

“The commemorative logo was created to showcase the franchise’s rich history with the background shield inspired by the shape of the Polo Grounds, the team’s first home in 1925 – and with the zeros designed in the outline of Giants Stadium,” according to New York’s team website. “At the base is a re-creation of the team’s classic skyline logo, representing every player who has worn the Giants uniform. The player is overlaid on a football, which is named “The Duke” in honor of Wellington Mara and features eight laces to symbolize the team’s eight NFL championships.”

To top off the look, the classic blue and red-winged helmet from the 1938 season reimagined in modern form. A helmet originally worn as a leather helmet when the Giants secured a 23-17 win over the Green Bay Packers in the 1938 NFL Championship Game to cap off the season.

“I feel like it’s gritty and vintage,” Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke said after he saw (and tried on) the uniform for the first time. “It’s a throwback to the 1920s, 1930s when they were out there just getting grimy. It’s a testament to all the guys who played before. They paved the way for us to play this great game.”

“I like the fact that we stick to the legacy,” Kayvon Thibodeaux added, “and keep paying it forward.”
